This will be my first game with Bernard Harris, fellow SAGA enthusiast.
Combatants are Harald Hardradda and his Hirdman warband against and unnamed Norman

Vikings: Harald Hardradda, Hero of the Viking Age
Varangian Guard, 12 man unit with banner and Dane axe
2 x 4 man Hirdsman

Normans: Warlord
8 mounted Knights with banner
2 x Sergeants foot
1 Sergeant with crossbow
1 Peasants with bow

Vikings set up on the left, Normans on the right, Normans move first. The hill is a flat topped hill, meaning that missile armed units must be on top to target units, unless the units are on the edge. The hill blocks line of sight. Points are scored for units in terrain features at the end of the turn, totaled at the end of turn 8.

Norman first move, two Sergeants move towards the wood, while Peasants take position to target Hirdmen.

Vikings Varangians move twice gaining the hill, using their banner to rest. Hardradda to the base of the hill bringing a unit of Hirdmen. End of turn one, Vikings 12 v Norman 0 points.

Normans move one unit of Sergeants into the wood, and reposition their Peasants.

The Vikings bring the rest of their Hirdmen on the hill and prepare for the impending attack. End of turn two, Vikings vs Norman 4 points

Realizing that he must destroy the Vikings the Normans maneuver to assault with their Knights. Normans also move another unit of Sergeants into the woods

Hardradda turns his Varangians to face the Knights, and moves his Hirdmen to face the weaker Norman forces. End of turn 3, Vikings 68, Normans 12.

The Normans position themselves for a coordinated assault . The Warlord moves forward with the crossbowmen.

Hardradda positions his warband and braces for the impending assault! End of turn 4, Viking 96, Normans 18.

The assault begins with the Norman Sergeants attacking up the hill, The result, 1 Norman, Vikings 0.

The Norman Knights charged the Varangians, inflicting 7 kills, but getting destroyed in the process. A huge loss for the Varangians, but more so for the Normans. Sorry, I forgot to take the engagement picture in the excitement.

After witnessing the horrific carnage, Hardradda and his Hirdmen rush from the safety of the hilltop, into the crossbowman.

They annihilate the Crossbowmen , while only losing one of their own, and turn on the Norman Warlord.

The Vikings lose one more Hirdmen, but bring down the Norman Warlord, Bringing and end to this epic battle.

Great tactics by Bernard Harris and his Normans! Vikings are tanks, and must use their SAGA abilities, Ullr, Frigg, and Thor as much as possible, and at the right time. Hardradda and his Varangian Guard are a fearsome force, but not invincible.
My SAGA gaming friend Phil Fores, is determined to beat down my Varangian tank. The following is the saga of Phil's attempt to do so with Harold Godwinson, and brothers, along with his AngloDanes. Control of the fork, 5 points along with casualties, or death of the warlord.

Hardradda and the Varangians , 12 man unit in the middle, Bezerkers on the right, and a unit of Bondi on the left.

Godwinson's and their forces. Ceorls in the field on the left, Godwinsons in the middle, a unit of Huscarls behind them. Bow armed Geburs on the right, a 8 man unit of Huscarl Dane axe unit behind them.

The Geburs moved to the left and setup to harass should the Varangians take the fork. The Ceorls moved forward to cross the wall and prepare to guard the Geburs from the impending attack from the Bezerkers.

Harald and the Viking warband move forward to take the fork, while Bezerkers move around on the right to attack the flank.

With Harald's forces taking the fork, Godwinson pulled his Geburs back, their bow fire not yeiding expected results. Also a unit of Huscarl move forward to reinforce the Ceorls, facing the Bezerkers.

Seeing the Ceorls positioning themselves, the Bezerkers determine to charge into them when the Huscarls round the corner of the building. They then charge the Huscarls with cries of Thor, Ullr, and Frigg. The result, both combatants wiped out in glorious carnages, with the Ceorls cheering with dismay and relief. Thinking to attack the Viking from behind the Ceorls rush forward, not expecting to be stopped by one lone Hirdsman warrior.

Harald, upon hearing the roar of the battle rushes to join the battle,

Harald Hardradda rounds the corner of the fence and witnesses the carnage. Seeing the Ceorls rushing forward, Harald charges forward out numbered 8 to1, shouting Thor,Ullr and Frigg. Three Ceorls fall in the first round of melee and a fourth in the second round, and the Ceorls fall back.

Harald enraged and bloodied again charges the remainig four Ceorls and slays another, again the Ceorls fall back, leaving the bloodied and worn King cursing them.

Sensing, Hardradda is at the end of his strength the Ceorls rush forward to exact their revenge.

This was to be Harald's final battle, taking two more Ceorls lives before falling to a grievous strike.

Yes, it would have been prudent for the warrior king to have returned to his Varangians and laid claim to certain victory, or wait for his Bondi to join him, but that's not what sagas are written about. A sure path to Valhalla for a mighty warrior, fallen in glorious battle.

Both sides had proxie banners, but they were never used. SAGA dice were used for SAGA abilities.
a unit of Peasants armed with bow.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;"> I perceived
Taillefer’s plan was to weaken me by using Massed Volley, from the Peasants, and
cross the ford with a superior force on weakened foe. Harold countered this
threat with use of Shieldwall and Intimidation. Knowing Taillefer, eager for
battle, was overconfident, Harold prepared his men and waited for the onslaught,
and the counter attack he would order. Frustrated by Harold’s tactics,
Taillefer forced the issue as the day was ending. He charged his Sergeants
across the ford towards my Geburs and Harold. Pushing them forward they fell
short of engaging my Geburs and were fatigued doing so. They were followed at a
distance by Taillefer. I ordered my Gerbur to fire and caused one casualty,
then Harold and his brothers charged at the exhausted Sergeants. Before
charging Harold used Trapped, to place a fatigue on three of Taillefer’s units,
this put my target of unit of Sergeants into exhaustion, cutting their melee
ability in half. The unit of Sergeants were reduced to one very exhausted warrior,
4 fatigues, while my Geburs cheered Harold on. I finished off the lone warrior
with Exhaustion, and charged Taillefer. The ensuing melee caused no casualties
and the Godwinsons fell back. Taillefer, enraged by the carnage, charged into
the Godwinsons, leaving his mounted Knights straining to catch up to support their
leader. Here, Ivo Taillefer died a glorious death in a furious battle, taking
Leofwine Godwinson with him. Had Taillefer waited for his Knights, for support,
he could have survived the combat and defeated the weakened King Harold.

My friend, Doug, asked if I could bring over a WW2 game for his son and and his son's scout friends. They had gone to Recruit-Con and gotten bitten by the wargame bug. My WW2 stuff was in a bit of dissaray so asked if WW1 Canvas Eagles would do. I had been working on some rules mods and welcomed the opportunity to give them a run throughly.
I decided to keep this event simple and focus on learning the basics, not tracking fuel or ammo. They flew 3 Dr1s vs a single Brisfit, flown by the dad, an experienced CE player. After setting up a little too far apart the boys each picked different approach to their prey. Two were cautious Ryan skirting high on the right flank, Will on the other flank choosing a lower approach. Joe, flying a red tripe, opted for a more direct approach from a slightly higher altitude. Doug knowing the strengths of his Brisfit and weakness of the Dr1, welcomed the attack of these pups. The first casualty was Joe, although getting a stinging hit against the Brisfit, he was taken out by a Pilot Killed result, from a long burst of a single Vickers gun. Ryan and Will gasped and eyed the Bristol wearily. Too late for caution as Doug's Brisfit dove down on Will's lowflying blue triplane. Engine hits were scored and smoke began to steam from Will's engine cowling. Will flew past the Bristol and circled around to attack the Bristol from the rear only to fall victim to a long burst from the rear Lewis gun, causing Will's Blue triplane to explode from a Fuel Tank Hit! But the Bristol was belching smoke from it's engine. Now Ryan became more hesitant, meanwhile the brothers, Joe and Will remounted their tripes and were eager for payback! At one point both the Brisfit and a tripe were spinning side by side from critcal hits, but recovered the next turn. In the end Doug's Brisfit suffered from numerous wing hits and finally a Fuel Tank Explosion, delivered by his son Ryan, who had closed in on the ragged Brisfit.
The boys did well for their first taste of miniatures 3D air combat. Canvas Eagles is a bit daunting at first but plays easily after few rounds.
The room was a bit dark so picture quality on my iPad suffered.
Tonight brought another boardgame night at Angela and Donnie Williams home. This time it was Flying Frog Productions, Fortune and Glory, the Cliffhanger Game.
The setting for this pulp action adventure set in then1930s. Full of action and adventure, loaded with exotic locations, treasures, mobsters and Nazis. Players take on the roles of uniquely talented adventurers. I felt like I was playing in a Indiana Jones adventure movie.
I had bought this game shortly after playing it once at ConnCon. I was impressed enough to shell out the $80 for it. I really like Flying Frog's stuff. Fun games, well constructed, high on replay value.
Tonight was a three player game, like my first experience. Donnie had play in an eight play game at Ted Conn's and was more familiar with the rules, so he ran the game. After set up the game ran smoothly, stopping only to clarify a few points with the rulebook. The game was eventful with a lot of unexpected events with players and npcs in the game, Mobsters, Villains , and Nazis seemed to be around every corner to thwart our endeavors.

The game is designed to accommodate up to eight players, but plays best with three to five, more if experienced players. We played about fifteen turns in three hours, referencing the rules to be sure we were doing thing correctly. Donnie took the lead at the beginning of the game, with Angela close behind.. It wasn't until the last third of the game that I finally made progress. Angela pulled a coup when a Villain beat her to a artifact, and the Angela snatched from him. I used all my resources to slow her down but in the end it was not enough.
Fortune and Glory is a great game. I can heartily recommend it.
I was fortune enough to attend Fields of Honor, game con again. I thought I had a great time last year, this time it was even better! Trent Burg, Jeff Hyland and their wives give their all to make this con a success, as well as all the great game masters. Five full sessions of awesome gaming, with some hard game choices to make!

Friday night I participated in Ryan Skow's, 28mm game, Down on the Farm-1970. ZANLA guerrillas attacking a Rhodesian farm under cover of darkness, defended by well armed farmers. There was Rhodesian police force as a relief force that showed up on a random die roll. Rules by Ambush Alley Games Force on Force, and supplement Bush Wars.
Ryan is a master modeler and worked from photos of the real farm to make this wonderful compound. I played this twice, once as the ZANLA, then as the Rhodesians. Afterwards we sat around and discussed the scenario. Ryan ran this a couple more times Saturday morning, with many people admiring this awesome gameboard. I will post a separate review with more pictures.

Saturday morning I played in Trent Burg's Star Wars Starfighter game. Rebel X, Y,and A-wings attacking an Imperial convoy escorted by TIE fighters and interceptors. Rules by Trent and minis were micro machines. I am a big fan of Trent's Warbirds in Miniature WW2 air combat rule, and this rule set is just as good. I flew 2Y wings and followed the X and A wings in the fray. Destroy the freighters and bug out was the mission.
All Imperial Freighters destroyed, as well as a lot of TIEs . I lost a Y-wing but destroyed a freighter and a TIE interceptor. I was able to fly my two ships and work them together to defend themselves. This rule set is great and three dimensional combat blows the two dimensional. You really feel like your dogfighting, you can always add the bells and whistles of the newer game. Great job Trent, I can't wait untill you post the rules on the yahoo group! This game is FUN!

Saturday midday I played in Jeff Guillin's Kings Musketeers skirmish game, One For ALL, One For All!, using his own rules, Ilse de France Swashbuckler miniature rules. I played two of the King's Musketeers aiding in the search for a insolent merchant, who has defied the courts summons.
This game was extremely fun and very Hollywood, rules easy to learn.
Saturday evening I finally got to experience SAGA Dark Age rules. I've read a lot about them and was anxious to play. Not your average rules, the battle boards a huge factor in the game. We were in a dark side of the room so the photos aren't great and I was more focused on the game.
Sunday, I had signed up to play a wild west Bar Room Brawl, but was lured to play a gorgeous 28mm WW1 trench action game. Rifle Grenadiers to the Forward SAP! Warhammer Historicals, The Great War rules. Beautiful figures and awesome terrain provided by Jude Becker. I enjoyed myself immensely and plan to do this also, possibly in 20mm though. Phil Flores's interest in gaming the Vietnam conflict has taken him from Charlie Company to Ambush Valley rules. Phil has a nice selection of 20mm figures and terrain that he has been collecting over the past years, off and on. Always searching for that perfect set of rules, there never is, Phil has found Ambush Valley suits him best for now. I have played in a couple of his games but never got around to posting them, and so here they are. Once at his house and another time at ConnCon, pretty much the same scenario both time, with a few minor differencess. Forces consisted of a few M113 ACAVs supported by a couple of M-48s, along with six squads of grunts, and in one game a Huey Slick. All on their way to "liberate' a VC held village. They were expected and ambushed by the garrison, luckily the main force was elsewhere. Of course the VC forces were hidden with each group represented by three dummy counter each, to be revealed on a successful spotting check. Both games were fun and very different. Phil also plays Lock 'N Loads
" Forgotten Heroes" Nam board game, lots of fun and challenging.

Here we are at ConnCon 2012. That's Phil on the left, Greg Moore in the black tee, and Tedd Conn in the blue tee.Phil has set the game up and explaining rules and objectives.
Another of Angela and Donnie Williams latest acquisitions from Gencon. I consider this a worthy rival of Twilight Imperium, not better but very fun, that is until the combat starts then, viscous. Main difference is the space exploration vs knowing what solar systems are available. Donnie introduced Eclipse to Phil Flores and I one evening and we had at it. It easy to learn mechanics, and being our first game Donnie helped us through. Eclipse is fun and not overly complex, but with a lot of strategy. Unique is having to fight NPCs over a newly discovered system. I would also say it has a high replay value with 2-6 players. Having a well organized storage system helps speed the pre game set-up.Visit BBGs: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/72125/eclipse for a comprehensive review. Thanks Donnie for a fun evening of gaming!

Angela and Donnie Williams are the boardgame drivers in our little circle, and have many interesting games and the most current. They go to Gencon and bring back all these awesome games, seems more than we have time to play, but we try anyway.
The latest is "Lyssan" touted as a Medieval strategy/combat game, fast playing and with a high replay value. See a comprehensive review at BoardGameGeek: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/97939/lyssan, they do a much better review than I can. I only wish Lyssan could accommodate 5-6 players instead of 4.
A pleasant evening of gaming was provide by Angela and Donnie, both gracious gamers and hosts indeed.

I have been playing Axis and Allies 1940 Global for about three months, almost every other weekend. Yes this game takes 8-12 hours to play, but is a blast! Even so we always have 6-8 players. The group I play with is studies WWII actively and we are tweeking the rules. I bought the Pacific 1940 and opened the box, then down loaded the 10 page errata/rules corrections. What a broken piece of crap it was! Rushed into production. I was obsessed with getting the Europe game but it was going for $225 on ebay. I lucked out and got it for $88 new! I've tried my hand playing each of the factions. This game is fun and frustrating to play and time flies by. My only complaint is that America can't declare war until the end of the 3rd turn, because historically Congress were "Isolationists" and wouldn't let Roosevelt declare war. Japan gets to invade Russia on turn one even though historically the Japanese invaded the soviet union twice, the first time it was 1937
and the last time it was 1940/1941. The Japanese were beaten back with
heavy losses both times due to heavy fire power from Russian
tanks-artillery -infantry by Marshal Georgi Zhukov. The game doesn't allow for this.
Recruits-Con Fall 2012 has come and gone. Thanks to Duane Fleck and his band of merry men and ladies, I and many others had a wonderful game filled weekend. There were a few regulars missed but there were many new faces and venders. The thing that stood out the most to me was the large number of under 16 year old attendees, whom I refer to as the future of our hobby. Indeed this convention is aptly named and very successful in it's mission. 10 years, 20 shows, and still recruiting!!

There were so many great games to choose from, allocating my time was difficult. The theme was "Old School" and many veteran gamemasters brought back golden oldies from earlier shows.I could of spent the whole show walking around taking pictures, but that what the Recruits-Con website is for, check out the gallery for the latest pictures when it gets upgraded, http://recruits.mtswebsites.com/Gallery.php

Chris Cluckey's amazing French and Indian War, Battle of Quebec.Using John Jenkins limited edition 54mm figures and Iron Ivan Games, "This Very Ground" Rules. Chris ran this game the whole convention and always had a table full of participants.
Kenneth Van Pelt's "N" Country, Airmobile Operations in Veitnam.. N scale, home rules.
All of the players will take the Chain of command for a
US air-mobile battalion in Vietnam. The enemy encounters are generated
from a deck of cards when US forces are searching areas of a valley.
The encounters generated in the search mission are researched typical
events that occurred for American soldiers. This is a simulation game
that is difficult to decide winner and loser- only experience.

Our club is playing a mini campaign using these rules and we're having a blast!!

We've played one off games and they were fun, but the campaign has ramped the fun up.
Best of all we can use any figures we want. Star Wars and D&D
prepaints are most common. I am using my old Necromunda, AT-43, and
Legions of Steel stuff that has been languishing for play.
Game play is fun ,intense, and full of surprises as new characters and
weapons appear. One week you seem like your at the top of the food
chain, with a tough gang and cool weapons, then you make a tactical
mistake, some bad dice rolls, and limp away with your survivors to
rebuild. Games can take 20 to 45 min, depending on the drama. Post game
generating replacements and equipment is just as intense.
I'm
currently 2 wins one loss, but my prospects look grim considering my new
recruits. My post game recruitment dice rolls were just as dismal as my
previous games combat rolls. A robot with defoliant guns on each arm, I need new dice.
Three mechas, left to right, Anti-Armor, rockets and chain-gun, fer right, Infantry Support, flammers, lasers, and such. and my favorite, the Close Assault, with shredder Talons to rip apart vehicles, buildings and mechas. Nasty boy indeed, don't get close to this one.
As you can see beautiful terrain and figures. I love Jason's mechas, they are poseable and have variable weapons configurations. I am also a huge fan of his aliens, they really put the alien in my SciFi gaming.
A while ago on TMP, someone posted an idea to cut down the blue electrical junction boxes. I had a bunch of them sitting around and decided to give it a go. I went out the garage where I had a wood band saw and had at it. I was very pleased with the results. Be warned it requires a steady hand due to the sloping walls.
I had nothing less than an awesome time, and regretted that I had to miss the Sunday morning set because I had to get back to Kansas City to work.
Fields of Honor is run by a great group of people and is filled with friendly enthusiastic gamers, and great games to be played. Featuring a good mix of historical and fantasy miniature games, with RPG and board games also.
Friday night, "Approach to Arnhem", double blind. 15mm, WWII rules by Trent Burg.

I played British Paras. Here we are setting up, a cautious entry, as the Germans could have setup anywhere on the map. Our mission was to cross the board through the city and get to the bridges with as many troops and equipment as possible.

Trent did a great job setting up two identical boards. For a double blind it proceeded at a brisk pace.

Saturday mornings game "Inn of the Crescent Moon". 28mm fantasy, rules by Ryan Skow.
The Crescent Moon Inn and Songhouse is being looted and monsters
are on the loose! You will control a single hero with the goal of securing as much treasure you can. You can choose to work with the
other heroes or face the monsters and traps alone - keeping the treasure
all to yourself!

This was an amazing piece of work! Six highly detailed levels. I must have took 50 pictures.

Plenty of action and surprises kept this game absorbing. This is the ground floor to give you an idea of the detail. I will post more pictures later.

Saturday midday "Rhodesia-Operation Uric" 28mm "Force on Force" rules terrain by Ryan Skow
1979 near Gaza, Mozambique. The Rhodesian forces have been deployed to
neutralize a training camp which serves as a major gateway for ZANLA
guerrillas into Rhodesia.

I was amazed at the detail of the terrain. A well thought out game with plenty of action, in a not often played theater in the US.

Saturday eve was "Commandos to the Rescue" 28mm rules by Trent Burg.
July 1944, a french resistance leader has managed to get himself
captured. British commando's are sent to rescue him before he spills
his guts to the Gestapo.

This was a blast. The first half of the game was spent creeping into the town encountering patrols and random drunk German officers. Barking dogs and random traffic kept the tension high. As we about to assault the Gestapo house a staff car pulled up with a German general and his aids. After some intense floor to floor, fighting inside the Gestapo house, we made off with our package and a annoyed German general in a commandeered lorry . Lot's of tension, surprises, and action, kept us on the edge of our seats. I'm making plans for my own version to run.

Sunday,I would have liked to played in Jeff Hyland's Lots of Gauls" a 15 mm "Hail Ceasar" rules, but I had to get back in time to work that evening. Next time I'll take more time off. There were many more great games as well as a silent auction.
Rumors have been filtering in from the outlying colonies that a new race has been encountered. They have not come in peace, instead they have brought machines of destruction and conquest. All attempts at communications have gone unanswered or ignored, but their intent is clear, extermination! Now they have arrived at New Terra, and have established a foothold. We call them the Formicidae because of their appearance, but Bugs seem to be the common terminology for them. The Terrans have drawn the line and are determined to stop these bugs and their conquest. War is here!

Reports of scout units armed with a plasma slug type weapons. They appear to have a natural shell armor and are bipedal.

The Terrans have sent ad hock units in an attempt to slow the advance on outlying cities, hopping to gather intell on tactics and Terran weapon effectiveness. The swarms attack without hesitation and alway close assault with great determination. Never retreating, they depend on numbers of attrition. Infantry alone cannot stop them, they close quickly dropping their weapons, grab their opponents and rend them with their mandibles. H.A.M.R units have proven very effective as they are immune to these types of attacks.

Heavy walker types have now been reported supporting swarms of assault groups. Also armed with plasma weapons. They are slow moving but appear heavily armored and armed. These have presented significant problems to the H.A.M.R units. Targeting the weapon systems seem to be the most effective way of dealing with them. The bugs also have effective individually armed anti air assets that are keeping our Saber gunships at bay.

A new Bug asset has appeared where Terran resistance has prevailed. Although not as heavily armed as the walkers, they have a very tough shell armor. Targeting their legs and openings in the center section is the only hope of stopping them. That and fielding a powerful Gauss weapon, not yet ready to be deployed.

Large and ugly we call it the Roach. A battle wagon troop carrier with special assault troops only seen with this unit. The Roach will move up into our defenses and spew out close assault troops.
Twice as it was written with the Special Forces getting whacked right off the bat. and twice with modifications to the Special Forces and them beating the crap out of the Brazilians. The modifications was to give the Special Forces a TQ of D10 instead of D8. In all games the IFV was less than effective. If the Special Forces escape to fall back on the hill as a group, they become a 10 dice Cuisinart. In the unmodified games the two outside Special Forces didn't survive the first round of combat. In the modified games they survived to regroup on the hill top, and maul the Brazilian units piecemeal. Still it's an interesting exercise.
We have been playtesting Tomorrow's Wars for some time now, and decided to take GruntZ for a spin. We played two sessions with the same scenario and varied the forces, and had a great time. Gruntz is easy to learn and well presented. the only minor complaint was that because it depends on profile cards, it doesn't have gun charts. We used the profile cards from the Yahoo group and made do with some modifications.

The scenario was a Sahadeen force and Titan Marine force competing over a fallen VTOL. Yes, those are AT-43 Kolossus walkers from my Highlander Space Bug army. We left them out in the 2nd game.

The objective: Downed VTOL with valuable weapons and data to be retrieved. Dead crew scattered about.

Sahadeen forces on the move, Infantry with two heavily armed APCs, and a salvaged Earth Force HAMR. These guys have loads of RPGs that will make for their lack of mechanized forces.

The Titan Marines arrive, ready to claim their property. Three squads of marines, a light and medium HAMR, and two heavy walkers.
Osprey wanted a quick and dirty demo to showcase Tomorrow's War. It was to last 10-15 min per session, and demonstrate game basics. All terrain, figures, and scenario were made by Jason Moore,
Micropanzer Wargame Studio, please feel free to check out his website for better pictures of his products. http://www.micropanzer.com/
The Mercs stand tough, and decimate one Alien unit, capturing one alien as the other unit closes in. They are better in close combat with a rifle and two pistols, but their numbers are too few and they die. The Alien command unit retreats to get more fodder.

Time limit expires and the game is called. The Alien command unit had failed it's charge attempt resulting in a failed effort. The Mercs had hung tough and completed their mission, retrieving valuable data banks and destroying the mech.

It made for a short and intense demo, not intended to be a fair fight, but to demonstrate Tomorrow's Wars combat system.

Two new grav scouts show up in Old Detroit.
